About Wood Identifier

You are splitting firewood, sorting through a pile of old lumber or looking at a fallen tree, and you want to know what wood it is. Our free wood identifier works best on the living or freshly fallen tree: photograph leaves, bark or seeds and it returns the tree's scientific name, such as Quercus alba (white oak) or Acer saccharum (sugar maple). A photo of planed boards or furniture alone is much harder to identify, so use the tips below for cut wood.

How It Works

If you can, photograph a leaf, a twig with buds and a patch of bark from the tree the wood came from; these give far more reliable results than the timber itself. For cut logs, photograph the bark still attached and a freshly cut end grain in daylight, showing growth rings and color. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Identifies the tree behind firewood, so you can tell oak, ash, maple and birch apart
  • Helps spot softwoods such as pine, spruce and fir versus hardwoods
  • Useful after storms or tree work when only bark and branches are left
  • Gives the scientific name to look up wood properties like hardness and burning quality
  • Free online with no sign-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about wood identifier

For the most reliable answer, photograph the leaves or bark of the tree the wood came from, and the identifier will return its scientific name, such as Fraxinus americana for white ash. Finished lumber without bark is difficult to identify from a photo, so treat any result for cut boards as a starting point.

Oak has distinctive rays (fine lighter streaks) visible on split surfaces, a strong tannic smell when freshly cut, and is heavy. Red oak end grain has large open pores, while white oak pores are plugged.

Hardwoods come from broadleaf trees like oak, maple and walnut, and their end grain usually shows pores. Softwoods come from conifers like pine and spruce, often have a resinous smell, and their end grain shows no pores.

Never burn wood from poison ivy or poison oak vines, painted or pressure-treated lumber, or oleander, as the smoke can be harmful. Some woods such as black walnut are also toxic to horses as bedding.

A clear photo of a leaf from the top and a close-up of the bark at chest height. In winter, a twig with buds and any fallen leaves or seeds under the tree help a lot.
