About Tree Identifier

A big shade tree in your yard, a street tree dropping odd seed pods, or a sapling that showed up in the hedge: knowing what tree it is changes how you care for it. Our free tree identifier answers "what tree is this?" from a photo of its leaves, bark or fruit, and gives you the scientific name with a link to read more. It covers deciduous trees, conifers and common ornamental species.

How It Works

Photograph a single leaf flat against a plain background, plus a close-up of the bark at chest height; for conifers, show how the needles attach to the twig. Add fruit, cones, seeds or flowers if the tree has them. The result gives the scientific name, a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates often-confused trees such as maple and sycamore, or ash and box elder
  • Works in winter from bark, buds and leftover seeds, not only from summer leaves
  • Helps you tell spruce, fir and pine apart by their needles and cones
  • Useful before pruning, planting nearby or hiring an arborist
  • Gives the scientific name you can use with local extension services and tree guides

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tree identifier

Upload a clear photo of a leaf, the bark, or any fruit or cone and the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Combining a leaf with a bark photo gives the most dependable result.

Often yes. Bark texture, bud shape, branching pattern and any remaining seeds or cones are all useful clues, so photograph those close up.

Spruce needles are sharp and square in cross-section, so they roll between your fingers, and the cones hang down. Fir needles are flat and soft, and the cones stand upright on the branches.

Both have palm-shaped lobed leaves. Maples have leaves in opposite pairs on the twig and winged seeds, while American sycamore has alternate leaves, round seed balls and peeling, patchy bark.

Some trees, like mulberry or crabapple, have edible fruit, but others, such as yew, have poisonous seeds or berries. Never eat fruit from a tree based on an app result alone.
