About Wheat Identifier

A field of wheat looks a lot like barley, rye or triticale from the roadside, especially when the heads are still green. Our wheat identifier tells you which cereal you are looking at and, where possible, whether it is bread wheat, durum, spelt or einkorn. Farmers, hikers and students use it to put a name to a grain field.

How It Works

Photograph a single head up close against the sky or a plain background, showing the awns (bristles) and how the grains sit in the spike. A second shot of the leaf where it wraps the stem helps separate cereals. The result names the grain and lists the features that confirm it.

Key Benefits

  • Separates wheat from barley, rye, oats and triticale by head structure
  • Helps tell bearded from beardless wheat and identifies spelt and einkorn
  • Recognizes wild grasses in a field margin that resemble young wheat
  • Shows growth stage clues useful for school projects and field walks
  • Free in the browser, no account

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about wheat identifier

Send a close-up of a head and the tool will tell you if it is wheat and suggest the type, such as bread wheat, durum or spelt. Awn length and grain arrangement are the main clues.

Barley heads have very long awns and grains arranged in rows of three at each node, and they droop when ripe. Wheat heads are chunkier with shorter or no awns and one spikelet per node.

Young wheat looks like a dense lawn of flat-leaved grass until it sends up stems with green heads in late spring. Heads turn golden as the grain dries in summer.

Grains in the field may be treated with pesticides or carry fungal infections, so do not eat them. Never eat wild or field-picked grains based on an app result alone.
