About Violet Flower Identifier

Purple flowers have popped up in your lawn, a pot of violas is missing its label, or you found a fragrant patch in the woods in April. Our violet flower identifier works out which Viola you are looking at, from common blue violet and sweet violet to garden pansies, and also catches plants that are often mistaken for violets.

How It Works

Take a close, straight-on shot of one flower so all five petals and any veining on the lower petal are clear, then a second photo of the leaves. Heart-shaped leaves, runners or a spur behind the flower help narrow the species. You get the plant name, how to tell it from close relatives and basic growing notes.

Key Benefits

  • Distinguishes common blue violet, sweet violet, dog violet and garden violas by petal markings and leaf shape
  • Spots non-violets with purple flowers, such as ground ivy, periwinkle and African violet
  • Helps you decide whether a lawn violet is a welcome wildflower or something to remove
  • Gives care notes for garden pansies and violas grown in pots and borders
  • Works from a phone photo, free once a day on the website without registration

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about violet flower identifier

Upload a clear photo of the flower and leaves, and the AI will name the Viola species or garden type and explain what sets it apart. If it is not a true violet, the result says what it is instead.

No. African violets (Saintpaulia, now often placed in Streptocarpus) belong to a different family; they have fuzzy leaves and flowers that are not built like a Viola. They are, however, listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Ground ivy (creeping Charlie) has square stems, scalloped round leaves, a minty smell and small tubular flowers. Violets have heart-shaped leaves on separate stalks and five-petaled flowers with a spur at the back.

Some violets are used as edible garnishes, but never eat any flower based on an app identification alone, and avoid plants that may have been sprayed. Confirm the species with a reliable expert first.

Most wild violets in North America and Europe bloom in early to mid spring, from March to May. Garden violas and pansies can flower in fall and through mild winters as well.
