About Vine Identifier

A vine is creeping up your fence, smothering a shrub or climbing a tree on the edge of your property, and you need to know if it is harmless or something like poison ivy. Upload a photo to our free vine identifier and it returns the plant's scientific name, helping you separate Virginia creeper from poison ivy, wild grape from porcelain berry, or English ivy from climbing hydrangea.

How It Works

Photograph a section of vine with several leaves still attached so the leaf arrangement and leaflet count are clear, and take a close-up of how it climbs: tendrils, twining stems, aerial roots or adhesive pads. Flowers or berries make results more reliable. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Helps tell poison ivy and poison oak from harmless climbers so you know what to avoid touching
  • Identifies invasive vines such as kudzu, Oriental bittersweet, Japanese honeysuckle and English ivy
  • Recognizes ornamental climbers like clematis, wisteria, jasmine and trumpet vine
  • Gives a scientific name to look up whether a vine can damage walls or trees
  • Free to try online with no account

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about vine identifier

Upload a photo of the vine with several leaves and the way it climbs, and the identifier will return its scientific name, such as Parthenocissus quinquefolia for Virginia creeper. Do not touch an unknown vine with bare hands until you have ruled out poison ivy.

Poison ivy has three leaflets per leaf (leaves of three, let it be), while Virginia creeper usually has five leaflets radiating from one point. Poison ivy vines on trees often look hairy because of aerial roots.

English ivy can hold moisture against walls, loosen weak mortar and, if it grows into the canopy, shade and weigh down trees. Virginia creeper and Boston ivy cling with small pads and are less likely to harm sound masonry but can be hard to remove.

Kudzu, Oriental bittersweet, Japanese honeysuckle, porcelain berry, English ivy and Chinese and Japanese wisteria are among those listed as invasive in many US states. Check your state or provincial invasive species list.

Some vines have edible fruit, such as grapes and passionflowers, but many others, including poison ivy, moonseed, bittersweet and English ivy, have toxic berries. Never eat berries from a vine based on an app result alone.
