About Vegetable Identifier

A seedling has popped up in your raised bed that you don't remember planting, or a farmers market stall has a knobby root you have never seen before. Ask "what vegetable is this?" with a quick photo. Our free vegetable identifier returns the plant's scientific name, so you can tell zucchini from cucumber seedlings, kohlrabi from turnip, or a parsnip from a white carrot.

How It Works

For a growing plant, photograph the leaves from above and the side, plus any flowers or developing fruit; for produce, photograph the whole vegetable and a cut cross-section. Daylight and a plain background give the clearest result. You get the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Identifies vegetables at the seedling stage, when squash, melon and cucumber all look alike
  • Names unfamiliar produce such as celeriac, daikon, chayote, taro or bitter melon
  • Helps tell volunteer vegetables from weeds in the garden bed
  • Shows when two vegetables are actually the same species, like broccoli, kale and cabbage
  • Free to try online with no account

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about vegetable identifier

Upload a photo of the plant or produce, ideally with a cut section, and the identifier will return its scientific name, such as Brassica oleracea for cabbage or Apium graveolens for celery and celeriac. It identifies the species, not the specific variety.

Zucchini seedlings are larger and sturdier, with broad leaves that often carry silvery markings, while cucumber seedlings are smaller with more triangular, finely toothed leaves. Cucumbers soon send out tendrils and climb.

They were all bred from wild cabbage, Brassica oleracea, by selecting for different parts: leaves for kale, the flower head for broccoli and cauliflower, and the terminal bud for cabbage. The identifier will therefore return the same species for all of them.

Often yes, but volunteer squash and gourds can cross-pollinate and occasionally produce bitter fruit containing cucurbitacins, which can make you ill. Taste a tiny piece and discard it if it is bitter, and never eat a wild plant based on an app alone.

Onions, garlic, leeks and chives are toxic to cats and dogs, and the leaves of tomato, potato and rhubarb are also considered harmful. Check the scientific name with your vet if a pet has chewed a plant.
