About Tree Leaf Identifier

Trees are tall, but their leaves end up at your feet, on your windshield and in your kids' pockets. Our tree leaf identifier tells you which tree a leaf came from, returning the scientific name with a link to the tree's profile. Whether it is a sugar maple, red oak, sweetgum or sycamore, one clear photo of a single leaf is usually enough.

How It Works

Choose an undamaged leaf, place it flat on a light surface, and photograph it from directly above including the leaf stalk. Note whether the leaves on the tree grow in opposite pairs or alternate along the twig, and add a photo of the bark if you can. The tool returns the botanical name of the tree.

Key Benefits

  • Separates maples (opposite leaves) from sweetgum and sycamore (alternate leaves), which have similar lobed shapes
  • Tells red oaks (pointed, bristle-tipped lobes) from white oaks (rounded lobes)
  • Distinguishes compound-leaved trees like ash (opposite) from hickory and walnut (alternate)
  • Great for fall leaf projects and herbarium sheets, when leaves are colorful but trees are hard to reach
  • Free in your browser, no account needed for the daily identification

Common questions about tree leaf identifier

Upload a photo of one complete leaf with its stalk, lying flat. The tool returns the scientific name of the tree it most likely came from.

Break the leaf stalk: Norway maple oozes milky white sap, sugar maple's sap is clear. Norway maple leaves are also usually wider than they are long.

The red oak group has pointed lobes tipped with tiny bristles; the white oak group has rounded lobes with no bristles. Within each group, lobe depth and leaf hairs separate species.

Yes, but make sure the leaf actually belongs to that tree, since wind mixes leaves from neighbors. A leaf still attached to a low branch is the safest choice.

Bark texture, fruits such as acorns, samaras or spiky seed balls, and the overall branching pattern all help confirm the identification.
