About Cactus Identifier

Supermarket cacti are often sold with nothing more than a 'Cactus assorted' sticker, and gifted ones rarely come with a name at all. Our cactus identifier looks at the stem shape, ribs, spine clusters and flowers in your photo and returns the botanical name, so you know whether you have a Mammillaria, an Echinopsis, an Opuntia or something rarer. That matters, because a desert barrel cactus and a jungle Christmas cactus need completely different care.

How It Works

Photograph the cactus from the side with good light falling across it so the ribs cast shadows, then add a close-up of one areole (the felted bump where spines grow) if you can. A flower or fruit makes the result much more reliable. You get the scientific name, which you can open on Wikipedia to check its native habitat, watering needs and winter rest.

Key Benefits

  • Tells true cacti apart from spiny euphorbias, which look similar but have no areoles and contain an irritating milky sap
  • Distinguishes holiday cacti: Thanksgiving cactus has pointed, claw-like teeth on its stem segments, Christmas cactus has rounded edges
  • Helps you decide whether your plant needs a dry, cool winter rest to flower or year-round warmth
  • Flags Opuntia species such as bunny ears, whose tiny barbed glochids lodge in skin and are best handled with tongs
  • Free from any browser, no account needed for your first identification of the day

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cactus identifier

Upload a side view showing the ribs and spines, ideally with a flower, and the tool will return the cactus's scientific name. Many small round cacti look alike, so the spine pattern and bloom color are what separate them.

True cacti have areoles, small cushion-like spots from which spines, branches and flowers grow. Euphorbias have spines in pairs straight from the stem and bleed white latex when cut; that sap irritates skin and eyes.

Narrow, stretched growth that leans toward the window is etiolation, caused by too little light. It does not reverse, but the cactus will grow normally from that point once moved to brighter light.

Water thoroughly only when the soil has dried out completely, which is often every two to three weeks in summer and very rarely in winter. Overwatering, not drought, is the most common reason indoor cacti rot.

Often yes, from rib count, spine color and arrangement, and body shape. Species within the same genus can be very similar without blooms, so add a flower photo when your plant blooms to confirm.
