About Tomato Identifier

Volunteer seedlings have appeared in your compost pile, or you are not sure whether the plant in the corner of the garden is a tomato, a potato or a weedy nightshade. Upload a photo to our free tomato identifier and it returns the scientific name, confirming Solanum lycopersicum or pointing to a relative such as currant tomato, tomatillo or black nightshade. It does not name cultivars like Brandywine or Sungold.

How It Works

Photograph a leaf showing its divided leaflets, the hairy stem and any flowers or fruit, from close enough to see detail but far enough to show the growth habit. A ripe fruit cut across shows the seed cavities. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates tomato seedlings from potato, eggplant, pepper and weedy nightshades
  • Helps identify volunteer plants from compost or last year's dropped fruit
  • Recognizes close relatives such as tomatillo, ground cherry and currant tomato
  • Gives a scientific name you can use to research growing needs
  • Free to use online with no sign-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about tomato identifier

Upload a photo of the leaves, flowers or fruit and the identifier will return the species, usually Solanum lycopersicum for garden tomatoes. Cultivar names such as Roma or Cherokee Purple are not part of the result.

Both have divided leaves, but potato leaflets are smoother and broader with small leaflets in between, while tomato leaves are more deeply cut and the plant has a strong tomato scent. Potato flowers are usually white or purple; tomato flowers are yellow.

Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum) has simple, undivided leaves and clusters of small berries that ripen black, while tomato has divided leaves and yellow flowers. Never eat berries from a volunteer plant you are unsure about based on an app alone.

Tomato leaves and stems contain solanine and tomatine and can upset the stomach of dogs and cats if eaten in quantity. Ripe tomato fruit is generally considered safe in small amounts.

It may, but many store-bought tomatoes are hybrids, so volunteer plants often differ from the parent. They usually still produce edible tomatoes once you have confirmed what the plant is.
