About Succulent Identifier

Succulents are sold in mixed trays, swapped as cuttings and labeled simply "assorted," so it is easy to end up with a windowsill full of nameless rosettes. Our free succulent identifier answers "what succulent is this?" with the scientific name from a photo. It helps you sort out Echeveria from Graptopetalum, Haworthia from small aloes, and jade plants from their relatives.

How It Works

Photograph the rosette straight down from above so the leaf arrangement is clear, then add a side view showing leaf thickness, the stem and any offsets. Bright, indirect daylight shows true leaf color and the powdery coating some species have. The result gives the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates often-confused rosette genera such as Echeveria, Graptopetalum, Sempervivum and Aeonium
  • Tells Haworthia apart from young Aloe and Gasteria
  • Names cuttings and offsets you received from friends or plant swaps
  • Helps you check whether a plant is a cactus or a non-cactus succulent
  • Gives you a name to research before repotting, propagating or placing near pets

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about succulent identifier

Upload a top-down photo of the rosette and a side view, and the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Many succulents sold in stores are hybrids, so the result may point to the genus or closest species rather than a cultivar.

Echeveria leaves are usually thick, smooth and often powdery, and the plant flowers on side stalks and lives on. Sempervivum (hens and chicks) is frost-hardy, has thinner, often hairy-edged leaves, and each rosette dies after flowering from its center.

Some are. Jade plant (Crassula ovata), Kalanchoe and many Euphorbia species are commonly listed as toxic to pets, while others such as Haworthia are generally considered safe. Check the scientific name with your vet or a reliable pet-safety list.

Tall, widely spaced leaves usually mean the plant is reaching for more light, a process called etiolation. Stretching changes its shape, so a photo of a compact, well-lit plant is easier to identify.
