About Seedling Identifier

Something just came up in the seed tray and the label is gone, or a row of green sprouts appeared in the vegetable bed and you cannot tell crop from weed. Our seedling identifier gives you the scientific name of the young plant from a photo, so you know what to keep and what to pull. It is most reliable once the first true leaves have appeared.

How It Works

Wait until the seedling has at least one or two true leaves, the ones that come after the first seed leaves (cotyledons). Photograph it from above and from the side in even light, keeping the soil out of focus. The result shows the plant's scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link to compare photos of mature plants.

Key Benefits

  • Helps sort crop seedlings from weeds in vegetable beds and allotments before you thin or hoe
  • Rescues seed trays when labels fade or get mixed up
  • Identifies tree seedlings like maple, oak or sycamore sprouting in lawns and borders
  • Lets you check self-sown flowers such as foxglove or poppies before you pull them
  • Gives a scientific name you can look up to see what the plant will grow into

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about seedling identifier

Photograph the seedling once its true leaves have formed and upload the image; the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Very young sprouts with only seed leaves look alike across many plants, so a few more days of growth often helps.

Cotyledons are the first leaves that emerge from the seed and are often simple and oval in very different plants. True leaves, which come next, have the shape typical of the species, so they are much more useful for identification.

Tomato true leaves are slightly hairy, divided into leaflets, and smell distinctly of tomato when rubbed. Common look-alikes such as black nightshade have plain, undivided leaves without that smell.

Yes. Maple, oak, ash and sycamore seedlings are common in lawns and beds, and their true leaves usually already show the shape of the adult tree's leaf.

Not until you know what they are, since some common garden seedlings, such as foxglove, are toxic. Use the scientific name to check reliable sources rather than relying on an app alone.
