Free Rice Identifier - Identify Rices by Picture Online Free

Upload a photo of the plant with its seed head and the tool returns the species name, most often Oryza sativa for cultivated rice. It does not distinguish named varieties such as basmati or jasmine, which are all the same species.

Not botanically. North American wild rice belongs to the genus Zizania, while true rice is Oryza; both are grasses and both produce edible grain.

Young rice plants have a small membrane (ligule) and ear-like flaps (auricles) where the leaf meets the stem, while barnyard grass has neither. At seed stage, barnyard grass heads are denser and often purplish.

The tool is designed for photos of living plants. Polished grains in a package lose the features used to identify the plant, so a photo of the growing plant works much better.

Rice flowers briefly, usually a few months after planting depending on variety and climate. The tiny flowers open on the panicle for only a short time each morning.
