About Pumpkin Identifier

A volunteer vine sprawled out of the compost heap, or the farm stand has a pile of squash with no labels, and you want to know what you are looking at. Our pumpkin identifier tells you which Cucurbita species it belongs to from a single photo. That matters, because pumpkins, winter squash and many ornamental gourds are split across several closely related species.

How It Works

Photograph the whole fruit from the side, then take a close-up of the stem where it joins the fruit, since stem shape is one of the best clues. If the plant is still growing, add a shot of a leaf and a flower. The result shows the scientific name, such as Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita maxima or Cucurbita moschata, with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Sorts pumpkins into the main Cucurbita species, which helps when planning seed saving and cross-pollination
  • Works on mystery vines that sprouted from compost or bird-dropped seed
  • Helps tell a true pumpkin from an ornamental gourd (Lagenaria or wild Cucurbita) at a fall display
  • Handy at farmers' markets where heirloom squash often lack labels
  • Free to try in the browser with nothing to install

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pumpkin identifier

Upload a photo of the fruit and its stem and the tool returns the Cucurbita species, for example Cucurbita pepo for classic jack-o'-lantern types or Cucurbita maxima for many large and blue-gray pumpkins. It does not name specific cultivars.

Cucurbita pepo usually has a hard, sharply angled, five-sided stem. Cucurbita maxima has a soft, round, corky stem, and Cucurbita moschata has an angled stem that flares out where it meets the fruit.

Usually it is a normal squash, but volunteers can be crosses with ornamental gourds and occasionally turn very bitter. Bitterness in squash can come from cucurbitacins, so do not eat a fruit that tastes noticeably bitter, and never rely on an app alone to decide.

Botanically there is none: both are fruits of Cucurbita species. Pumpkin is a cultural name for round, usually orange types, while squash covers the rest, including butternut and acorn squash.

Yes, a clear photo of a leaf and a flower can be enough to get the species. Leaf lobing, prickliness and flower shape all help separate pumpkins from cucumbers, melons and zucchini at that stage.
