About Perennial Identifier

The border you inherited comes back every spring with plants you did not plant, or a clump keeps returning in the same spot and you have never learned its name. Our perennial identifier names the plant from a photo, so you can tell a treasured hosta or peony from a self-spreading thug. It is aimed at the long-lived plants of flower beds, cottage gardens and shady corners.

How It Works

Photograph the plant in flower if you can, with one close shot of a bloom and one of the leaves and the way the clump grows from the ground. Out of season, a photo of the foliage and any seed heads still helps. The result shows the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Names inherited border plants such as hostas, daylilies, peonies, phlox and coneflowers
  • Helps tell planted perennials from spreading weeds before you divide or dig
  • Separates look-alikes like black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia) and purple coneflower (Echinacea)
  • Lets you find the right name before buying more of a plant you like
  • Free to try straight from your phone in the garden
