About Pepper Identifier

Your garden produced peppers that do not match the seed packet, or you found an unlabeled chile at the market and want to know how cautious to be. Our pepper identifier answers "what pepper is this?" with the Capsicum species from a photo. Most hot and sweet peppers belong to just five cultivated species, and knowing which one narrows things down quickly.

How It Works

Photograph the pepper still attached to the plant if possible, showing the fruit, the calyx (the green cap) and a leaf; a flower helps a lot, since flower color and spots separate the species. Cut fruit can also show wall thickness and seeds. The result gives the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates the main cultivated species: Capsicum annuum, chinense, frutescens, baccatum and pubescens
  • Helps explain cross-pollinated or mislabeled plants in the vegetable garden
  • Distinguishes chile peppers from black pepper (Piper nigrum), an unrelated vine
  • Useful for chile growers saving seed who need to know the species
  • Works from an ordinary phone photo, free to try on the website

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pepper identifier

Upload a photo of the pepper with its cap, a leaf and ideally a flower, and the tool returns the most likely Capsicum species. Bell peppers, jalapenos and cayenne are all Capsicum annuum, while habanero and Scotch bonnet are Capsicum chinense; the tool does not name the specific variety.

You cannot reliably judge heat from appearance, since plants of the same species can range from sweet to very hot. Handle unknown peppers with gloves and avoid touching your eyes.

Capsicum annuum usually has a single white flower per node. Capsicum chinense often has two or more greenish-white flowers per node and a distinct constriction where the calyx meets the fruit.

Ornamental peppers are usually Capsicum annuum and generally edible but often extremely hot and bred for looks, not flavor. Do not eat any unfamiliar pepper based solely on an app identification.
