About Orchid Identifier

The plant tag fell out of the pot, or you were handed a blooming orchid at a party and nobody knows what it is. Upload a photo and our free orchid identifier names it by its scientific name, so you know whether you are holding a Phalaenopsis, a Dendrobium, an Oncidium or something rarer. You also get a Wikipedia link to read more about the genus and species.

How It Works

Photograph an open flower straight on so the lip (labellum), petals and sepals are all visible, then add a second shot showing the leaves and any pseudobulbs at the base. Soft daylight works best; flash tends to wash out the color patterns on the lip. The result gives you the Latin name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Tells the common supermarket moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) apart from Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium and Cymbidium
  • Useful when an orchid arrives as a gift or from a garage sale without a label
  • Helps you put a name on wild terrestrial orchids such as lady's slippers or helleborines spotted on a hike
  • Gives a scientific name you can paste into orchid society forums or plant shop searches
  • Free to try on the website, with more identifications in the Telegram bot or the free iOS app

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about orchid identifier

Take a clear photo of an open flower and the leaves, upload it, and the identifier returns the most likely scientific name. Most potted orchids sold in shops are Phalaenopsis hybrids, but Dendrobium, Oncidium, Cymbidium and Cattleya are also common.

It is harder, because orchid flowers carry most of the identifying features. A leafless photo of the plant may still narrow it down by leaf shape and pseudobulbs, but a flower photo gives a much more reliable result.

Phalaenopsis has a few broad, flat leaves growing from a short base and no pseudobulbs. Dendrobium grows tall, cane-like stems with leaves along them, and flowers often appear along the upper part of the cane.

Yes. North America and Europe have many native terrestrial orchids, such as lady's slippers (Cypripedium), helleborines (Epipactis) and spotted orchids (Dactylorhiza). Many are protected, so photograph them rather than dig them up.

No. The tool returns the genus and species level scientific name, not registered hybrid or grex names. Many shop orchids are complex hybrids, so treat the result as the genus or closest species.
