About Moss Identifier

Green cushions are spreading across your roof shingles, a shady lawn has turned into a soft carpet, or you are building a terrarium and want to know what you collected. Upload a close-up to our free moss identifier and it returns a scientific name, helping you separate cushion mosses like Leucobryum from feathery Hypnum or star-like Polytrichum. Many mosses look similar, so expect genus-level results more often than with flowering plants.

How It Works

Get as close as your phone allows, ideally with macro mode, and photograph the moss when it is moist, as many species curl up and look alike when dry. Include a side view of a single shoot and, if present, the spore capsules on their stalks. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Helps separate true mosses from lookalikes such as lichens, liverworts and clubmosses
  • Useful for terrarium and moss garden builders choosing species that suit their conditions
  • Helps work out why moss is taking over a lawn, since common lawn mosses favor shade and compacted soil
  • Gives a scientific name you can search in bryophyte guides and forums
  • Free in your browser with no sign-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about moss identifier

Upload a sharp, close-up photo of moist moss and the identifier will return a scientific name, for example Polytrichum commune for haircap moss. Because many mosses can only be told apart under a microscope, the result may be at genus level.

Moss is green, soft and made of tiny leafy shoots, and it greens up quickly after rain. Lichen is usually gray-green, yellow or orange, crusty or leafy, and has no stems or leaves at all.

Moss holds moisture, which can shorten the life of roof shingles, and on lawns it is mainly a sign of shade, poor drainage or compacted soil. It does not kill grass directly but fills gaps where grass struggles.

A macro close-up of a wet patch, with a side view of one shoot and any spore capsules visible. Photograph the moss in diffused light rather than strong sun to avoid glare on the leaves.

Most common mosses are not considered toxic to cats and dogs. However, plants growing among moss, and moss treated with lawn or roof chemicals, may be harmful, so stop pets from eating it.
