About Money Tree Identifier

The name money tree is used for several very different houseplants, so it is easy to be unsure what you actually bought. Our money tree identifier looks at your photo and tells you whether it is Pachira with its braided trunk, a jade plant, a Chinese money plant or an umbrella tree. You also get care advice for the plant it really is.

How It Works

Photograph the full plant, including the trunk or stems, and add a close-up of one leaf cluster. For Pachira, the hand-like leaves with five to nine leaflets and the braided stems are key; for round-leaved plants, a shot from above helps. The result names the plant and covers light, watering and pet safety.

Key Benefits

  • Sorts out the common name confusion between Pachira, jade plant and Pilea peperomioides
  • Tells Pachira apart from schefflera, which also has palmate leaves but is toxic to pets
  • Explains yellowing or dropping leaves on braided money trees
  • Gives tips for loosening old braid ties so trunks do not get strangled
  • Works from one photo, free once a day without an account

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about money tree identifier

Upload a photo of the whole plant and a leaf close-up. The AI will tell you whether it is Pachira aquatica or glabra, a jade plant, a Chinese money plant or another plant sold under that name.

Pachira has fewer, longer leaflets that often droop slightly, and it is usually sold with a braided trunk. Schefflera has shinier, more numerous leaflets arranged like an umbrella and a single or multi-stem form without braiding.

Pachira aquatica is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Jade plant and schefflera, which are also called money trees sometimes, are toxic.

Yellow leaves on Pachira usually mean overwatering or poor drainage, especially in pots without holes. Sudden moves or cold drafts can also cause leaf drop.
