About Melon Identifier

A trailing vine with round fruit appeared in the garden, or you picked up an unfamiliar melon at an Asian or Middle Eastern grocery. Our melon identifier tells you from a photo whether it is a true melon, a watermelon or another cucurbit. The answer comes as a scientific name you can copy and look up.

How It Works

Photograph the whole fruit showing the rind pattern, then a cut half showing the flesh and seed cavity, since the seed arrangement is a strong clue. If it is still on the vine, add a photo of a leaf. The result shows the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates true melons (Cucumis melo) from watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), which is a different genus
  • Helps place unusual market fruit such as horned melon (Cucumis metuliferus) or winter melon (Benincasa hispida)
  • Identifies volunteer vines that sprouted from discarded melon seeds
  • Useful for telling melon seedlings from cucumber and squash in the vegetable patch
  • Free to use on the website, with extra identifications in the Telegram bot and iOS app

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about melon identifier

Upload a photo of the whole fruit and a cut half and the identifier gives the species, such as Cucumis melo for cantaloupe, honeydew and many other melons. Those are all one species, so the tool will not name the specific type or cultivar.

Yes. Cantaloupe, honeydew, galia, canary and many Asian melons are all Cucumis melo, bred into different groups. Watermelon is a separate species, Citrullus lanatus.

Melon leaves are rounded and only shallowly lobed. Watermelon leaves are deeply cut into narrow, finger-like lobes.

Horned melon or kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus) is sold as food and its green, jelly-like pulp is eaten. As with any unfamiliar fruit found outside a shop, do not eat it based on an app result alone.
