About Lilac Identifier

For a couple of weeks in late spring, lilac fills yards with scent, then fades back into an ordinary green shrub. Common lilac, Korean dwarf lilac, reblooming hybrids and Japanese tree lilac all behave differently, and butterfly bush is often mistaken for one. Our lilac identifier tells you which you have from a photo of the blooms or leaves, so you can prune and plant accordingly.

How It Works

Photograph a whole flower cluster and a few individual florets up close to show their shape and whether they are single or double. Add a leaf, since common lilac has smooth, heart-shaped leaves. The result names the species or cultivar group, bloom time, mature size and pruning advice.

Key Benefits

  • Separates common lilac from Korean, Meyer and reblooming lilacs
  • Recognizes Japanese tree lilac, which flowers creamy white in early summer
  • Distinguishes lilac from butterfly bush, which blooms on cone-shaped spikes later in summer
  • Explains the right time to prune: just after flowering
  • Helps diagnose powdery mildew, a common late-summer issue

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about lilac identifier

Upload a photo of the flower cluster and a leaf. The AI identifies the species and may suggest a cultivar group based on flower color and form.

The most common reasons are pruning after midsummer, which removes next year's buds, too much shade, or an old shrub full of tall, woody stems. Renewal pruning over a few years can restore flowering.

Lilacs bloom in spring with rounded clusters and heart-shaped leaves. Butterfly bush flowers from summer into fall on long, narrow spikes and has lance-shaped, gray-green leaves.

Common lilac (Syringa) is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Be careful not to confuse it with Persian lilac (Melia azedarach), an unrelated tree whose berries are poisonous.
