About Leaf Identifier

Sometimes all you have is a leaf: one that blew into your yard, came stuck to your shoe, or belongs to a plant that has not flowered yet. Our leaf identifier names the plant from the leaf alone, returning the scientific name and a link to read about it. It is handy for seedlings, vines climbing a fence, weeds in a flower bed and houseplants that never bloom indoors.

How It Works

Lay the leaf flat on a sheet of white paper or hold it against the sky, and photograph it straight on so the whole outline, the edge (smooth, toothed or lobed) and the vein pattern are sharp. If it is still on the plant, include a bit of stem to show whether leaves are opposite or alternate. You get the botanical name, and Wikipedia covers the rest.

Key Benefits

  • Identifies plants before they flower, when most field guides are hard to use
  • Helps check vines with leaves of three, telling poison ivy from lookalikes like box elder seedlings and Virginia creeper (which has five leaflets)
  • Useful for school leaf collections and nature journals
  • Works with a leaf you picked up, so you do not need access to the whole plant
  • Free, browser-based, one identification a day without registration

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about leaf identifier

Photograph the leaf flat on a plain background with its whole outline in view and upload it. The identifier returns the scientific name of the plant it came from.

Look for the bud at the base of the leaf stalk: a compound leaf has one bud at the base of the whole group of leaflets, not one at each leaflet. Ash, walnut and sumac have compound leaves.

Poison ivy has three leaflets, with the middle one on a longer stalk, and leaves that can be smooth or toothed, glossy or dull. Avoid touching unknown three-leaved vines and photograph them instead.

The upper side is usually enough, but the underside shows hairs, color and vein detail that help with tricky species. If the first result seems off, try a photo of the back.

Often yes, as long as the shape and edges are intact. Colors change in fall, so the outline and veins carry most of the information.
