About Lawn Weed Identifier

Yellow flowers, creeping patches or coarse clumps are crowding out your grass, and you want to know what weed is in your lawn before reaching for any treatment. Our free lawn weed identifier gives you the scientific name of the plant from a photo, along with a Wikipedia link to learn how it grows. Here "weed" means unwanted lawn and garden plants such as dandelion, clover, crabgrass or creeping Charlie.

How It Works

Get down low and photograph one weed from directly above so the leaf shape and arrangement are clear, then take a side shot of any flower or seed head. If it creeps, show the runners; if it forms a rosette, show the whole rosette. The result gives the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Tells broadleaf lawn weeds like dandelion, plantain and clover from grassy weeds like crabgrass
  • Helps separate creeping Charlie (ground ivy) from look-alike henbit and purple deadnettle
  • Knowing the exact weed lets you choose a targeted control method instead of guessing
  • Lets you spot plants some people keep on purpose, such as white clover in pollinator lawns
  • Free to try on one photo a day in the browser

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about lawn weed identifier

Photograph the weed from above and upload it, and the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Common answers include Taraxacum officinale (dandelion), Trifolium repens (white clover), Digitaria (crabgrass) and Glechoma hederacea (creeping Charlie).

Crabgrass has wider, lighter green blades than most lawn grasses and grows in low, sprawling clumps that spread outward from the center. It is an annual that dies after the first frost, leaving bare patches.

Both have scalloped leaves and small purple flowers. Creeping Charlie spreads with long runners that root along the ground and smells minty when crushed, while henbit grows upright from a single base and has leaves that wrap around the stem.

Most common lawn weeds are not a major risk, but some, like creeping Charlie, can be mildly toxic to horses and other animals in large amounts. The bigger danger is often weed killers, so keep pets off treated lawns as the label directs.

Many broadleaf weeds such as dandelions flower in spring, while crabgrass germinates as soil warms in late spring and is most visible in mid to late summer. Identifying weeds early makes them easier to manage.
