About Lavender Identifier

English lavender, lavandin, Spanish lavender with its rabbit-ear bracts, French lavender with toothed leaves: they all look purple and smell good, but hardiness and uses differ a lot. If you bought an unlabeled pot or want to know what grows along a path, our lavender identifier tells you which type you have from a photo. It also flags look-alikes such as catmint, Russian sage and hyssop.

How It Works

Photograph a flower spike from the side so the shape and any top bracts are visible, and a close-up of the leaves to show whether they are smooth or toothed. A photo of the whole plant helps compare stem length. The result names the species or hybrid, hardiness, pruning advice and culinary notes.

Key Benefits

  • Separates English lavender, lavandin, Spanish and French lavender
  • Tells you which types are hardy enough for cold winters
  • Distinguishes lavender from catmint, Russian sage and hyssop
  • Explains when and how far to trim so the plant does not get woody
  • One free identification per day with no account

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about lavender identifier

Upload a side photo of a flower spike and a close shot of the leaves. Spike shape, bracts and leaf edges let the AI separate the main lavender species.

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the type traditionally used in cooking, while lavandin is stronger and more camphor-like. Only use a plant in food if you are certain of it, never based on an app identification alone.

Catmint has soft, gray-green, toothed heart-shaped leaves and looser flower spikes, and it is loved by cats. Lavender has narrow, linear leaves and denser, more fragrant spikes.

Small nibbles of the plant rarely cause more than mild stomach upset, but concentrated lavender essential oil can be harmful to cats and dogs.
