About Iris Identifier

Tall sword-like leaves fill a corner of your yard, or a patch of blue flowers is blooming at the edge of a pond, and you want to know which iris it is. Upload a photo to our free iris identifier and it returns the scientific name, separating bearded iris from Siberian iris, Japanese iris, the native blue flag or invasive yellow flag. It identifies the species, not named hybrid cultivars.

How It Works

Photograph an open flower from the front and the side so the falls, standards and any beard or yellow signal patch are visible, and include a shot of the leaves and base of the plant. Iris leaves and rhizomes help when the plant is not in bloom. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates the main garden irises, which need different growing conditions
  • Helps spot invasive yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) along ponds and streams
  • Tells true irises from look-alikes such as daylily foliage, gladiolus or blue-eyed grass
  • Gives the scientific name to check dividing and planting needs for that species
  • Free to use with one identification per day

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about iris identifier

Upload a photo of the flower and leaves, and the identifier will return the species, such as Iris sibirica, Iris germanica or Iris versicolor. Most bearded irises sold in garden centers are hybrids, so the result may be a general name rather than the exact cultivar.

Bearded irises have a fuzzy strip (the beard) on each of the lower petals, wide flat leaves and thick rhizomes at the soil surface. Siberian irises have no beard, grassy narrow leaves and smaller, more delicate flowers.

Yes. Irises, especially the rhizomes, contain compounds that can cause vomiting, drooling and diarrhea in cats and dogs. Keep pets from digging them up and call your vet if one has been chewed.

Most garden irises flower from late spring to early summer: dwarf and bearded irises first, then Siberian irises, with Japanese irises a few weeks later. Some reblooming bearded irises flower again in fall.

Iris leaves are flat and arranged in a fan that grows from a rhizome, while daylily leaves are more arching, folded along the midrib and grow from a fleshy root crown.
