About Indoor Plant Identifier

You moved into an apartment that came with a leftover plant, or a coworker left a pot on your desk before going on vacation. Our indoor plant identifier names it from a photo, so you can finally look up what it needs instead of guessing. It covers the plants people keep on windowsills, shelves and office floors, from pothos and peace lilies to snake plants and rubber trees.

How It Works

Take one photo of the whole plant in its pot and a close-up of a single healthy leaf, showing the shape, edges and any variegation. Near-window daylight gives truer colors than indoor lamps. The result shows the plant's scientific name, a copy button and a Wikipedia link where you can read about it.

Key Benefits

  • Separates common look-alikes such as pothos (Epipremnum) and heartleaf philodendron
  • Lets you put a proper name on office plants and inherited pots
  • Gives you the scientific name to look up light and watering needs from good sources
  • Helps check whether a plant is a species often listed as toxic to cats and dogs before it goes near pets
  • Works with a phone photo taken right where the plant sits

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about indoor plant identifier

Photograph the whole plant and one leaf up close, upload the photo, and you get the most likely scientific name. Common answers include Epipremnum aureum (pothos), Spathiphyllum (peace lily), Dracaena trifasciata (snake plant) and Ficus elastica (rubber plant).

Pothos leaves are thicker and a little waxy, with a groove along the stem where the new leaf emerges. Heartleaf philodendron leaves are thinner and more heart-shaped, and new leaves come out of a thin sheath (cataphyll) that dries and falls off.

Some are. Many popular houseplants in the arum family, such as pothos, philodendron, dieffenbachia and peace lily, contain calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth. Look up the scientific name with your vet or the ASPCA plant list rather than relying on an app.

Usually yes, as long as some leaves still show their normal shape and color. Photograph the healthiest leaf you can find for the best result.
