About Herb Identifier

A pot labeled 'mixed herbs' has grown into three plants you cannot tell apart, or something aromatic is spreading through your garden bed. Rub a leaf, take a photo and ask "what herb is this?" Our free herb identifier returns the scientific name, helping you separate oregano from marjoram, flat-leaf parsley from cilantro, or mint from lemon balm.

How It Works

Photograph a healthy stem tip from the side so you can see how the leaves are arranged, plus a close-up of the leaf surface and edge; flowers help a lot with the mint family. Avoid wilted cuttings and shoot in soft daylight. The result shows the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Tells apart culinary look-alikes such as parsley and cilantro, oregano and marjoram, or thyme and savory
  • Helps identify self-seeded or overwintered herbs in the garden
  • Useful for naming herbs in unlabeled nursery pots and gift planters
  • Gives the scientific name you need to check a wild herb against a foraging guide
  • Free in the browser with one identification per day

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about herb identifier

Upload a clear photo of the leaves and stem, and the identifier will return a scientific name such as Origanum vulgare for oregano or Melissa officinalis for lemon balm. Never eat or make remedies from a wild herb based on an app result alone.

Flat-leaf parsley has glossier, more pointed and deeply toothed leaflets, while cilantro has rounder, softer, lobed leaves. Crushing a leaf is the quickest check, as cilantro has a strong, distinctive smell.

Plants in the mint family usually have square stems and leaves arranged in opposite pairs, and many are aromatic. That family includes mint, basil, oregano, thyme, sage and lemon balm.

Yes. Poison hemlock and fool's parsley resemble parsley and wild chervil, and foxglove leaves can be confused with comfrey. These are dangerous, so only use wild herbs when an expert has confirmed the identification.

Not all of them. Chives, garlic and other alliums are toxic to cats and dogs, and some sources list oregano and mint as irritants. Check the scientific name with your vet or a pet poison database.
