About Grass Identifier

Maybe you are trying to figure out which grass your lawn is, what is growing in a meadow, or whether that tall clump by the fence is an ornamental grass or a weed. Our grass identifier gives you the scientific name from a photo. It covers lawn grasses, ornamental grasses, wild meadow species and grassy weeds.

How It Works

If the grass has a seed head, photograph it close up against the sky or a plain backdrop; that is the most telling part. Add a shot of a single blade and the place where it joins the stem, plus the growth habit (clump, runners or creeping mat). The result gives the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Helps you tell cool-season lawn grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue from warm-season types like Bermuda and St. Augustine
  • Names ornamental grasses such as miscanthus, fountain grass and blue fescue
  • Spots grassy weeds such as crabgrass, quackgrass and annual bluegrass in turf
  • Useful for matching seed or sod when patching a lawn
  • Works for meadow and roadside grasses on walks

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about grass identifier

Upload a close-up of the seed head and a blade of grass, and the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Mowed lawn grass without seed heads is harder to identify, so let a patch grow if you can.

Kentucky bluegrass has fine, soft blades with a boat-shaped tip and spreads by underground runners. Tall fescue has coarser, wider blades with prominent ridges and grows in clumps.

A common rule of thumb is "sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have joints." Sedge stems are usually triangular, rush stems are round and solid, and grass stems are round with visible nodes.

Late spring through summer, when most grasses flower and form seed heads. In early spring or after mowing, identification relies on leaf features alone and is less certain.
