About Forest Plant Identifier

Ferns, low shrubs, berries and spring wildflowers line every woodland trail, and few of them have signs. Our forest plant identifier gives you the scientific name from a photo of what you find under the trees, from trilliums and mayapples to ferns, mosses and woodland shrubs. Many forest plants and berries are poisonous, so use it for learning, never to decide what to eat.

How It Works

Photograph the plant where it grows, with a close-up of a leaf and any flower or berry, and a wider shot showing the whole plant. Forest shade is dim, so hold the phone steady or brace it on a knee, and avoid flash, which bleaches leaf color. The result gives the scientific name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Names spring ephemerals such as trillium, bloodroot and mayapple
  • Helps you recognize poison ivy and other plants to avoid on the trail
  • Separates look-alike ferns using frond shape and the pattern of spore dots
  • Useful for hikers, campers, scouts and nature journaling
  • Free to try from the trail as long as you have a signal

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about forest plant identifier

Upload a photo showing a leaf, any flower or berry, and the plant's overall shape, and the tool returns the most likely scientific name. Dense undergrowth can confuse the image, so keep one plant in focus.

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) has leaves made of three leaflets, the middle one on a longer stalk, and grows as a ground cover, shrub or hairy climbing vine. Virginia creeper, a common look-alike, usually has five leaflets.

Not without expert confirmation. Woodland plants such as baneberry, pokeweed, yew and nightshade have poisonous berries, so never eat a wild berry based on an app or photo alone.

Often not: many woodland wildflowers grow slowly and are protected, and most parks forbid picking. A photo lets you identify the plant without harming it.

Early spring, before the tree canopy leafs out, is peak season for many woodland wildflowers. By early summer the shade deepens and fewer plants bloom on the forest floor.
