About Fern Identifier

Ferns carpet shady woodland floors, sprout between garden stones and hang in baskets on porches, yet most of them look alike at a glance. Snap a frond and our fern identifier tells you if it is a lady fern, ostrich fern, Boston fern, bracken or another species, along with its preferred light and moisture. If you have been wondering "what fern is this" in your shade bed, this is the quickest answer.

How It Works

Lay one frond flat and photograph the whole thing, then turn it over and take a close-up of the underside to show the spore dots (sori) and their pattern. A shot of the base where fronds emerge from the crown or rhizome also helps. You get the species name, whether it is evergreen or deciduous, hardiness and care tips.

Key Benefits

  • Uses frond cut, leaflet shape and spore pattern, the features botanists rely on for ferns
  • Distinguishes edible-fiddlehead ostrich fern from bracken and other ferns you should not eat
  • Helps you pick ferns suited to dry shade versus boggy spots
  • Identifies houseplant ferns like Boston, bird's nest and maidenhair and explains their humidity needs
  • Works on a single photo in your browser, with a free daily identification

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about fern identifier

Photograph a full frond plus its underside and upload both; the AI looks at how finely the frond is divided and where the spores sit to name it.

Some are. Asparagus fern (not a true fern) can irritate pets, and bracken is toxic to livestock; Boston fern is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Ostrich fern fiddleheads are smooth with a deep U-shaped groove on the inside of the stem and a brown papery scale; bracken shoots are fuzzy and branch into three. Never eat a fiddlehead based on an app alone.

Neat rows or clusters of dots under the frond are usually sori, the spore cases, and are normal. Irregular, sticky or moving spots can be scale insects.

Many garden ferns such as lady and ostrich fern die back in fall, while Christmas fern and some shield ferns stay green through winter.
