About Elm Tree Identifier

Elms once lined countless Main Streets before Dutch elm disease, and today you still find them in older neighborhoods, hedgerows and as tough volunteer seedlings in alleys. If you are wondering what kind of elm tree this is, our elm tree identifier names species such as American, Siberian, Chinese, slippery or wych elm from a photo. It also tells you when the tree is actually a hackberry, zelkova or hornbeam.

How It Works

Photograph a leaf flat against your hand so the lopsided base and double-toothed edge are visible, and add a picture of the bark and overall shape. In spring, the flat round seeds with a papery wing are a great extra clue. The result includes the species, how it was recognized, disease risks and whether the tree is considered invasive.

Key Benefits

  • Checks the uneven leaf base that is the fastest way to recognize an elm
  • Separates the weedy Siberian elm from the fall-seeding Chinese lacebark elm
  • Identifies the classic vase-shaped American elm in older streetscapes
  • Notes leaf yellowing and wilting patterns associated with Dutch elm disease
  • Helps bonsai growers confirm Chinese elm and zelkova before buying

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about elm tree identifier

Upload a clear photo of a leaf and the bark. The AI compares leaf size, texture and base shape to suggest the most likely elm species.

Both have uneven leaf bases, but hackberry leaves have three main veins from the base and its bark is covered in corky warts. Elm leaves have one central vein with straight side veins and a doubly toothed margin.

Most elms, including American and Siberian elm, release their round winged seeds in spring. Chinese lacebark elm is an exception and sets seed in late summer or fall.

In much of North America Siberian elm spreads aggressively by seed and is listed as invasive in several states, so removing seedlings early is wise.
