About Edible Plant Identifier

Foragers, gardeners and curious walkers often spot plants that might be food: dandelion, purslane, wild garlic, lamb's quarters, elderberry. Our edible plant identifier gives you a likely name from a photo and points out dangerous look-alikes, so you know what to research next. Treat it as a first step only: never eat a wild plant based on an app's result alone.

How It Works

Photograph the leaves from above and below, the stem, and any flowers, seeds or fruit; for bulb plants, include the base where the leaves emerge. Crushing a leaf and noting the smell (garlic, carrot, mint) is useful context to add mentally. The result names the plant, lists which parts are traditionally eaten and highlights toxic look-alikes.

Key Benefits

  • Highlights deadly look-alikes such as lily of the valley for wild garlic and water hemlock for wild parsnip
  • Helps identify common backyard edibles like purslane, chickweed and dandelion
  • Recognizes garden herbs and vegetable plants when labels are lost
  • Notes which parts of a plant are traditionally used and which are toxic, as with rhubarb leaves
  • One free photo identification a day, no sign-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about edible plant identifier

Upload clear photos of leaves, stem and flowers or fruit; the AI suggests a name and lists look-alikes. Always confirm with an expert or a field guide before eating anything wild.

Wild garlic (ramps or ramsons) smells strongly of garlic when crushed and each leaf grows on its own stalk; lily of the valley has no garlic smell and is highly poisonous.

No. Raw elderberries, stems and leaves can cause nausea; the ripe berries are normally cooked before eating, and red elderberries are best avoided.

No. Purslane has thick, fleshy leaves and clear sap, while spurge has thin stems, small flat leaves and a milky sap that is irritating.

Rules vary by place, and park plants may be sprayed, so check local regulations and avoid roadsides.
