Free Corn Identifier - Identify Corns by Picture Online Free

Upload a photo of the plant with its tassel or ear, and the identifier will confirm whether it is Zea mays. Types such as sweet corn, dent corn, flint corn and popcorn are all the same species and are not distinguished in the result.

Corn has a male tassel on top and separate female ears with silks on the side of the stalk, while sorghum carries its grain in a single seed head at the top. Before flowering, sorghum leaves often have a whiter midrib and a waxy coating.

Sweet corn is harvested young, when the kernels are soft and sugary, while field (dent) corn is left to dry and used for animal feed, flour and ethanol. You can usually tell by the kernel: dry dent corn has a small dimple at the top.

The corn plant itself is not considered toxic, but corn cobs are a common cause of intestinal blockage in dogs. Note that the houseplant called 'corn plant' is a Dracaena, which is toxic to cats and dogs.

Corn usually tassels about two months after planting, in mid to late summer, and the silks appear a few days later. Pollen from the tassel falls on the silks, and each pollinated silk becomes one kernel.
