About Conifer Identifier

Pine, spruce, fir, hemlock, cedar: most people call any needled tree a pine, but they are different genera with different needs and uses. Our conifer identifier names a conifer from a photo of its needles, cones or bark, returning the scientific name and a link to read more. It works on park trees, backyard specimens, dwarf garden conifers and the evergreens you meet on a hike.

How It Works

Take a close photo of a twig showing how the needles attach: in bundles, singly, in flat sprays or as overlapping scales. Add a cone if you can find one, and a shot of the bark for mature trees. The tool returns the botanical name, which you can open on Wikipedia for size, hardiness and native range.

Key Benefits

  • Separates pines (needles in bundles of two, three or five) from spruces (single, square, sharp needles on small woody pegs)
  • Tells firs, with soft flat needles and upright cones, from Douglas-fir, whose hanging cones have three-pointed bracts
  • Identifies the yew, whose red berry-like cones and needles are highly toxic to people and animals
  • Recognizes larch and bald cypress, conifers that turn gold and drop their needles every fall

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about conifer identifier

Photograph a twig with the needles clearly visible, plus a cone if possible, and upload it. The identifier returns the tree's scientific name.

Spruce needles are sharp and square in cross-section, roll between your fingers, and leave rough pegs when they fall. Fir needles are flat, soft, often have white stripes underneath and leave a round, smooth scar.

Not necessarily. Pines, arborvitae and other conifers shed their oldest inner needles every autumn; it is a concern only if the browning affects new growth at branch tips.

Yew is the most dangerous, with toxic needles, bark and seeds. Look up any identified species before letting animals chew branches or cones.

It can usually identify the species, such as Picea glauca for a dwarf Alberta spruce. The exact cultivar name is harder to determine from a photo.
