About Bulb Identifier

You are cleaning out a shed and find a paper bag of unlabeled bulbs, or you dug up a clump of papery bulbs while edging a flower bed. Our free bulb identifier helps answer "what bulb is this?" by returning the plant's scientific name. A bare bulb has few clues, so the best results come from photos of the leaves or flowers it produces.

How It Works

If you only have the dormant bulb, photograph it next to a coin for scale, showing the tunic (papery skin), the root plate and, if possible, a bulb cut lengthwise. Results are much more reliable once the bulb sprouts, so plant one in a pot and photograph the leaves and flower when they appear. You get the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Helps separate common spring bulbs such as tulip, daffodil, hyacinth, crocus and allium
  • Useful for sorting mixed bulbs from a garage, a garden sale or an old flower bed
  • Identifies the flowering plant later in the season so you can label bulbs for next year
  • Gives the scientific name to look up planting depth and hardiness for that species

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about bulb identifier

Upload a clear photo of the bulb, or better of its leaves and flower, and the identifier will return the plant's scientific name, such as Narcissus pseudonarcissus or Tulipa gesneriana. Dormant bulbs are hard to tell apart, so a photo of the growing plant gives the most reliable answer.

Tulip bulbs are teardrop-shaped with a thin, smooth brown tunic that peels easily, while daffodil bulbs are rounder, have a thicker papery tunic and often a long neck. Daffodils frequently form small offset bulbs attached at the base.

Many are. Tulip, daffodil, hyacinth and autumn crocus bulbs contain compounds that are toxic to dogs and cats, and bulbs are often more toxic than the leaves. Store bulbs out of reach and contact a vet if a pet has chewed one.

Edible alliums smell strongly of onion or garlic when crushed, while daffodil and tulip bulbs do not. Never eat an unidentified bulb based on an app result alone, because some ornamental bulbs are poisonous.

Photograph it in bloom, showing the flower and leaves together. Many spring bulbs flower between late winter and late spring, while lilies, gladiolus and dahlias (which grow from tubers) flower in summer.
