About Berry Identifier

You are on a trail and spot a shrub loaded with dark berries, or a child has just picked a handful of red ones from a hedge. Before anyone tastes them, ask "what berry is this?" and upload a photo. Our free berry identifier returns the plant's scientific name, which helps you separate blueberries from look-alikes such as buckthorn, or wild raspberries from bittersweet nightshade.

How It Works

Photograph the berries still attached to the branch together with several leaves, because leaf shape and how the fruit is arranged (single, in clusters, or along the stem) matter more than berry color. Add a second photo of one berry cut in half if you can, showing seeds or a stone, and shoot in daylight without flash. The result shows the plant's Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Points out dangerous look-alikes such as pokeweed, yew, holly and nightshade that often grow near edible species
  • Works with garden shrubs like elderberry, currant and serviceberry as well as wild hedgerow plants
  • Gives a scientific name you can cross-check in a regional foraging guide
  • Useful for parents and pet owners who need a starting point quickly
  • Free to try in the browser, no account needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about berry identifier

Upload a photo showing the berries on the branch with the leaves, and the identifier will return the plant's scientific name, such as Sambucus nigra for elderberry. Never eat a wild berry based on an app result alone; confirm it with a local expert or a reliable field guide first.

Many red berries are toxic, including holly, yew, bittersweet nightshade and honeysuckle species, while others like cranberries and currants are edible. Identification by photo is only a first step, so treat unknown red berries as unsafe and keep children and pets away from them.

Blueberries have a small five-pointed crown at the bottom of each berry and grow on woody shrubs with smooth, oval leaves. Berries without that crown, or growing on vines or tall herbaceous stems, are not blueberries.

In much of the US, UK and Canada, strawberries and serviceberries ripen in early summer, raspberries and blackberries in mid to late summer, and elderberries and many toxic berries such as pokeweed in late summer to fall. Exact timing depends on your region and altitude.

Contact your vet or an animal poison control line right away and bring a sample or a photo of the plant. Identifying the plant name can help the vet, but do not wait for it before calling.
