About Bell Pepper Identifier

Your seedling labels washed away and you no longer know which plant is the bell pepper and which is the jalapeño, or you found an odd pepper at the market and want to know what it is. Upload a photo to our pepper identifier and it returns the scientific name, separating Capsicum annuum (bell peppers, jalapeños, cayenne) from species like Capsicum chinense (habanero) or Capsicum baccatum. It names the species, not the individual cultivar.

How It Works

Photograph the pepper on the plant with leaves and, if possible, a flower, because flower color and how many flowers grow at each node help separate Capsicum species. A second shot of the fruit cut lengthwise shows wall thickness and seeds. The result gives the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates the main cultivated pepper species, which differ in heat and growing needs
  • Helps sort mixed seedlings after labels have been lost
  • Identifies unusual peppers found in farmers markets and ethnic grocery stores
  • Gives the scientific name to look up growing temperatures and season length for that species
  • Free to use online with no sign-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about bell pepper identifier

Upload a photo of the fruit with the plant's leaves, and the identifier will return the species, which for bell peppers is Capsicum annuum. Variety names and colors like 'California Wonder' are not included in the result.

Bell peppers and many chilies such as jalapeño and cayenne belong to the same species, Capsicum annuum. Bell peppers simply carry a recessive gene that means they produce almost no capsaicin, so they are not hot.

Most bell peppers start green and turn red, yellow or orange as they ripen, depending on the variety. Green peppers are simply harvested before they mature, which is why they taste less sweet.

Habaneros (Capsicum chinense) often produce two or more flowers per node and have wrinkled, bright green leaves, while Capsicum annuum usually has one flower per node and smoother leaves. The fruit shape and heat are also very different.

Pepper plants belong to the nightshade family, and their leaves and stems are generally considered unsafe for pets to eat. Ripe bell pepper flesh is usually fine for dogs in small amounts, but check with your vet.
