About Aster Identifier

Late-summer and fall borders, prairie restorations and roadsides fill with small purple, blue and white daisies, and many of them are asters. Our aster identifier helps answer "what aster is this" by narrowing your photo to New England aster, New York aster, smooth aster or a garden hybrid, and by flagging look-alikes like fleabane and Erigeron. Botanists have moved many North American asters into Symphyotrichum, and the result shows both names.

How It Works

Photograph a flower head close up so the ray count and center color show, plus a section of stem with leaves to show whether they clasp the stem, are hairy or smooth. Note the time of year, because fleabanes bloom earlier. The result lists the species, both old and new botanical names, height and bloom season.

Key Benefits

  • Separates true asters from fleabane, boltonia and Michaelmas daisies
  • Recognizes key native species such as New England and smooth aster
  • Shows the newer Symphyotrichum and Eurybia names alongside Aster
  • Highlights pollinator value for late-season bees and butterflies
  • Free to use online without an account, one identification per day

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about aster identifier

Upload a close-up of the flower and leaves; the AI compares ray color, leaf attachment and stem hairiness to name the species.

Fleabanes (Erigeron) usually bloom in spring and early summer and have many very thin rays, while asters bloom mostly in late summer and fall and have fewer, wider rays.

New England aster has hairy stems and leaves that clasp the stem, while New York aster has smoother stems and narrower, non-clasping leaves.

Garden asters are generally listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Most asters flower from late August through October, providing nectar after summer flowers fade.
