About Aquarium Plant Identifier

Aquarium plants are notoriously mislabeled in stores, and the free cutting a fellow hobbyist gave you probably came with no name. Our aquarium plant identifier names the plant in your tank from a photo, returning its scientific name with a link to more information. That tells you whether it needs CO2 and strong light, whether it should be planted in substrate or tied to wood, and whether it belongs underwater at all.

How It Works

Take a photo through the front glass with the tank lights on and the filter briefly off so leaves stop moving, or lift a stem out and lay it on a white surface. Include the base: a rhizome, a rosette or a creeping runner says a lot about the plant. You get the scientific name, which you can look up for light, CO2 and temperature needs.

Key Benefits

  • Spots non-aquatic plants sold for aquariums, such as mondo grass, aluminum plant or dracaena, which slowly rot underwater
  • Tells you whether a plant like Java fern or Anubias has a rhizome that must stay above the substrate
  • Helps explain sudden leaf loss in Cryptocoryne, which commonly 'melts' after a move and regrows
  • Lets you identify stem plants and carpeting plants in someone else's aquascape photo
  • Free for one identification per day, straight from your browser

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about aquarium plant identifier

Upload a clear photo of the plant with its base visible, or take a stem out and photograph it on a plain background. The identifier returns the scientific name you can use to look up its requirements.

Many aquarium plants are grown out of water (emersed) at nurseries and change leaf shape and color after being submerged. Older leaves may die back while new submerged leaves form.

Some stores sell houseplants like mondo grass, purple waffle or lucky bamboo for tanks, but they cannot survive fully submerged long term. Identifying the species tells you whether it is truly aquatic.

Java fern has thinner, often lance-shaped leaves with visible veins and sometimes small plantlets at the tips, while Anubias has thick, glossy, rounded leaves. Both grow from a rhizome that rots if buried.

It can often name common aquatic mosses such as Java moss. Algae are not plants in the usual sense and are harder to identify from photos.
