About Apple Identifier

You noticed a tree full of small fruit along a hiking trail, or an old hedgerow tree is dropping fruit on your driveway, and you want to know: is this an apple? Upload a photo to our free apple identifier. It returns the scientific name, which tells you whether you are looking at the cultivated apple (Malus domestica), a wild crabapple, or a similar-looking tree such as a pear, quince or hawthorn.

How It Works

Take one photo of the fruit on the branch with leaves around it and, if you can, one of the blossoms in spring, which are pink-tinged in apples and pure white in most pears. Cutting an apple across its middle reveals the five-pointed seed star, which helps too. The result gives you the Genus species name with a copy button and a Wikipedia link.

Key Benefits

  • Separates apples from pears, quinces, hawthorns and ornamental crabapples
  • Works in spring from blossoms and leaves, before any fruit appears
  • Helps identify wild or feral apple trees growing along roads and trails
  • Gives a species name to look up pollination partners and pruning needs
  • Free to use with one identification per day on the website

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about apple identifier

Upload a photo of the fruit and leaves and the identifier will return the species, such as Malus domestica for orchard apples or Malus sylvestris for the European crabapple. It does not name cultivars like Granny Smith or Fuji.

Pear trees usually grow taller and more upright with glossy, pointed leaves, while apple trees are more spreading with softer, slightly hairy leaves. Pear blossoms are usually pure white; apple blossoms are often pink on the outside.

Wild and feral apples are usually edible, though often sour, but always confirm the identification first because some ornamental fruits look similar. Don't eat anything based on an app result alone, and avoid trees near heavily sprayed areas.

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can release cyanide when crushed and digested. Swallowing a few whole seeds is not considered dangerous for people, but pets should not be given apple cores.

In most temperate regions apple trees flower in spring, roughly April to May, a little after pears and cherries. The fruit ripens from late summer to late fall depending on the variety.
